Track Notes, 2/15/13

Monday, February 18th is President's Day, a day off from school and will will NOT have practice.  We are, however, encouraging our athletes/coaches (only) to attend on Monday a rare opportunity to meet and listen to Track and Field Olympic 400 Gold Medalist Sanya Richards-Ross.  As Coach Neisler's note earlier this week stated, this opportunity was arranged through much effort by Mboka Mwilambwe (freshman Maya Mwilambwe's father).  Illinois State is welcoming Ms. Richards-Ross as part of their Black History Month Cultural Dinner.  The following information was included on Coach Neisler's note:

WHO:  Coaches and athletes of the University High School Track and Field Teams
WHAT:  A chance to see Sanya Richards-Ross and hear her speak
WHEN:  8-8:45pm on Monday, February 18, 2013
WHERE:  Old Main Room in the Bone Student Center

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross knows what it’s like to climb back up the tower in sports. After competing in the 2008 Olympics and 2009 track and field season, she was injured several times to the point of a non-active 2010 season. Her 2011 season was dedicated to working her way back into form, which gained her an impressive 46.66 second time in the 400 meter run. In the 2012 Olympics she tied to become one of the most decorated female track and field athletes of all time.

Sanya is a part of the Livestrong campaign, a group set up to provide support in the fight against cancer. She is also a fighter against Rule 40, which restricts advertising activities of athletes and coaches surrounding the Olympics. BET has featured the Olympian as well, and highlighted her love for fashion.

Our new uniforms were unveiled yesterday.  They represent no small amount of work and generosity from numerous sources.  I want to specifically acknowledge Coach Neisler, Coach Hampton and the U-High Booster Club making this happen.  Their dedication to our U-High athletes is amazing to be a part of!  Thanks to everyone involved!  We will review our expectations regarding accountability and care for uniforms at the Spring Sports Meeting which is Next Wednesday, February 20th at 6p.

A big thanks to Tammy Baker for again volunteering to keep our web site up to date this year.  As soon as the schedule is approved, I will post it on the web site.  You can reach our web site from the Athletics page on U-High's school web site.  Anyone wanting to, can meet with me briefly after the meeting Wednesday to suggest ideas for the site.  Thanks and have a good (long) weekend!   Remember ... run, stretch, workout, drink water even if we are not having formal practice!
