Track Notes, March 27, 2015

Our final indoor meets of 2015 are tomorrow.  First congratulations to our 11 qualifiers for the Illinois Top Times Meet, aka, Indoor State.  They will compete at IWU tomorrow with competition in field events starting at 9a.

Our qualifiers are:
  • Sophomore Katie Reeves and Freshman Lauren Seaver in the Pole Vault.  This event starts at 9:05a
  • Junior Kara Henry in the Triple Jump.  This event is scheduled for 11a.
  • Juniors Chante Stonewall and Kara Henry in the 60M Hurdles.  This event is scheduled to begin at 11a.
  • Senior Ashley LaFayette, Juniors Madigan Landess and Shannan Supan and Sophomore Amber Nanni in the 4 x 800.  This event is scheduled for 11:40a
  • Juniors Spencer Smiley, Micayla Mathieson, Chante Stonewall and Sophomore Nia Gilbert in the 4 x 200.  This event is scheduled for 1:25p
You can go to the Illinois Top Times web site for additional meet information and competitors for each event.

This meet will host many of the best high school athletes in the state.  The level of competition is as good as you'll see in high school sports until the outdoor state meet.  So proud of our young ladies competing ... if you love track ... you'll love this meet.

Come out and enjoy the competition!

All other athletes, unless previously excused, are assigned to compete or assist at the Joseph Cogdal Relays at ISU.  We are the host of this meet and will need to have every available athlete helping with events.  All athletes should be at Horton Field House by 8a. We are responsible for set up, timing, running events and clean up after the meet.  All members of the team should expect to stay at the meet until excused by coaches.  This is the only meet we host the entire season .... a direct reflection of our school and program ... and we want to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible.
Coach Neisler has been in charge of the meet ... a huge job considering the number of teams and entries.   This is in addition to his regular coaching and teaching duties.  Just want to ensure I say thanks for his dedication to our team and our athletes ... we are lucky to have him coaching here at UHSTF!

I have attached the program and meet heat sheets above for Cogdal.

All should bring snacks, water and money for food.  Both venues will have food but it's best to bring what you need.  Snack bars are not always the best food for athletes competing.

Please consider coming out to cheer on our athletes at either venue.  They have worked very hard this indoor season in not so nice weather and limited facilities ... come out to watch some talented young ladies who deserve our support!!

Please let me know if you have questions!

Track Notes, March 19, 2015

The website has results posted for our first two meets thanks to Tammy Baker.  It also has our schedule, records etc ... please go to the U-High Athletics website and click on Girl's Track.  Tammy also posts all of our notes in case you need that info later.

Please be sure all athletes bring outdoor training gear to every practice.  I admit to some frustration to the fact I still have athletes acting surprised when I say we are going outside during practice.  I  have emphasized this nearly every day since we started but ...  All should bring sweatpants, sweatshirt, hat, gloves and a long sleeve shirt in their bags to be prepared for all types of weather.  I'm hoping for great weather too but we need to be ready for all types of weather.

We have two meets this Saturday, March 21.   The schedules are attached.

First is the Gene Armer Invitational in Urbana.  Athletes assigned to this meet will meet at U- High at 6:30a and will leave promptly at 645a.  (Please be on time ... we do not hold the bus)  If you are going to the meet to watch and are planning to take your child home with you, please remember to sign your daughter out using the sign out book which will be at the camp.  We are responsible for getting all athletes home safely and if they are missing when it comes time to leave for home, we cannot leave until we have accounted for all athletes.  If you want your child to ride home with another adult/parent, we need a note from you giving them permission.  If there is no note, they must ride home on bus.  Athletes are not allowed to ride home from a out of town meet with another student.  Please help us keep these rules and all athletes safe.  Athletes should be prepared to stay the entire meet unless excused.

All athletes, despite which meet they are assigned, should bring snacks, water, extra clothes and money for food.  (Some meets sell shirts too)

The assignments for Gene Armer are listed below:

2015 Lady Wildcat Indoor Invite

I have attached the information for this afternoon's meet.  We have a very small portion of our team participating due to Spring Break and the school NY trip.  The meet is an all girls competition, consists of 27 teams and will be held at IWU.  All athletes assigned to a field event, 60M Hurdles or 60M Dash should be at IWU no later than 3:00p  All other athletes assigned an event should be there by 3:30p.  If not assigned an event and in town, be there by 4p.  This meet is historically run on time and should be finished no later than 8:30p.

Parents of athletes assigned to the last events, please remember it will take time for your daughter to cool down after the event so please build in some time.  All athletes are expected to be at the entire meet unless excused by Coach Neisler or myself.

There will be no practice scheduled after tonight until we resume our regular practice schedule on Monday.

If you are enjoying the sunshine and warmth on break ... enjoy your time off!  If you are in town, please come cheer on your favorite athletes at a great facility hosting some of the State's best.   Always fun to watch the talent of these young athletes from across Illinois!

Welcome to University High School Girl's Track and Field

Welcome to University High School Track and Field (UHSTF):

Good Morning!  This is Coach Shaver, and for those new to U-High track, I am, along with Coach Neisler,  the coach for girl's track and field.   We would like to welcome back our wonderful veteran parent supporters as well as welcome our new parents to the program.  We are glad to have your child in our program and will strive to make the experience a positive one for all!  Thanks to all who attended the Spring Sports Meeting.  If you were unable to attend, we will be posting our handouts on the web site soon.  You can find our website by going to the University High School Athletic site and clicking on Girl's Track.  Tammy Baker posts the parent and athlete e-mails on this site as she gets them from me.  The web site also includes some team history such as school records and past meet results.  Thanks also to Joan Styczynski for putting together this e-mail list for our use!

If you have questions, concerns or need to have your athlete excused from practice, please e-mail me at shavers6@aol.com and/or CC Coach John Neisler at jmneisler@gmail.com.  Please let us know prior to practice if your child will not be attending for family or medical reasons.  They are responsible for letting us know about school conflicts, again, before practice. Please understand that it helps to have an e-mail that your child is excused from practice.  We have a rather large team and Coach Neisler and I appreciate not having to try to remember which athlete told us they would be absent Wednesday ... or was it Thursday??? You get the idea.

Although we have been doing conditioning workouts for the past few weeks, practice has officially begun.   Practice will be Monday through Friday, beginning at 3:10p and we will try to finish by 5:15.  For those parents picking their child up from practice, it may be best to plan on 5:30p so you will not be left waiting for them to collect their "stuff" and finish visiting.   The athletes can let Coach Neisler and I know if they have a reason to leave early once they get to practice.  If this is a regular issue, we will address it with the athlete.   If your athlete is participating in a winter sport, they are not required to be at practice until after their sport ends.  We will work with each of these athletes to determine their starting date ... some may need a short rest after their winter season ends and we will carefully work them into track practices.

The first indoor meet for the majority of athletes will be the University High School Invite at Horton Field House this Saturday, March 7th.  The coaches are making assignments now and we will post then later this week, along with a meet schedule.  We understand the first two meets are during Spring Break.  If your athlete is available, they will be included in the meets.  If they are out of town enjoying the sunshine ... we are jealous!

We are excited about this season and look forward to working with your child.  There will be several coaches working with the athletes this season.  Coach John Neisler and I will work across all disciplines although I mostly work with sprinters and John's primary assignment is the distance athletes.  Several coaches work with both boys and girls teams; Coach Karonji Karr works with the jumpers/sprinters, Coach Natalie Brunson Wheeler works with hurdlers/sprinters,  We also have a few volunteers helping occasionally.  The coaches will make every effort to meet the parents of our athletes during the first few meets.

Again, my e-mail address is shavers6@aol.com and my phone number is 309/310-3018.  Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions or concerns.

I will send e-mails regularly to keep you updated on what is going on.  I will send the schedule for Saturday's meet as soon as I receive it but I want to let you know the following now.  Athletes assigned to compete at 9a should be at Horton by 8:15a.   Athletes assigned to 60M Dash and 60M Hurdles need to be there by 8:45a and all other athletes need to be at Horton by 9a.  Just to give everyone fair warning, this meet is an all day event.  Historically, the meet is finished by 4p, but triple jump has been known to last past 4p.    Athletes needing to be excused before the meet ends need to let either Coach Neisler or I know before Saturday. All athletes participating/attending meet are expected to be at meet the entire time unless they have been given permission to leave by Coach Neisler or myself.  Athletes are not allowed to leave for lunch and return.  We are blessed with many athletes to keep track of .... so please help us be sure they are where they should be!  Athletes should bring snacks and water, uniform and warm up clothes and any personal items in a gym bag.  Uniforms should not be left in the open when they are not being worn.  They are very expensive and could be seen as great souvenirs by some so please be sure to keep them out of sight.  No electronic devices allowed on the track floor/infield, so please keep those placed away safely also.

Go Pioneers!

PS, if you have an additional e-mail address you would like me to send notes to or want to be removed from this list, please let me know.  Thanks!

Track Notes, 5/22/14

For those of you coming to see your favorite team this Friday and/or Saturday at the EIU stadium.  Parking is limited so leave early to give yourself some time to walk to the stadium once parked.

The following time schedule is copied off the IHSA web site.  It is NOT a firm schedule.  They may adjust for bad weather or run the meet ahead of schedule if they choose as they did last year.   It is about a 2 hour drive to Charleston ... hope to see you there!

Time schedule is as follows: (Taken from the IHSA web site)

Track Notes, 5/20/14

Congratulations to our University High School Girl's Team, the 2014, Class 2A Sectional Champions!  This talented group has worked through what would be excuses for many teams (i.e. no practice facilities) and scored in all but two events in a 17 team meet.  This type of consistent scoring is what coaches always hope for but rarely see.  These athletes have also demonstrated the definition of sportsmanship.  So many coaches and parents (and even bus drivers) have commented to me on the talent and demeanor of this team ... Coach Neisler and I are extremely proud of these young ladies and feel blessed to coach them as athletes.

The following athletes will represent our team at the Illinois State Girl's Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday at the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL.
  • Katie Reeves (Pole Vault)
  • Gabi Jacobs (Shot Put, Discus)
  • 4x800 Meter Relay (Ashley LaFayette, Madigan Landess, Leah Taylor, Amber Nanni with alternates Sydney Billingsley, Shannan Supan, Katie Herrman, and Nadia Khusro)
  • Sydney Billingsley (3200, 1600)
  • Shannan Supan (3200)
  • Chante Stonewall (100m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles)
We had a handful of athletes just miss qualifying, which, for me as a coach, is extremely difficult.  The weather seemed to take it's toll across the board in sprinting and field events.  Results show only 1 person other than the top two places qaulified for the state meet in sprint/field events.  We have athletes who have worked very hard for the chance to compete at state and having a variable we have no control over such as weather affect their chance is disappointing.  It is, however, the nature of our sport.  I was impressed with the way our athletes handled it (much better than I did, I should say) and I want to be sure to recognize their effort and the manner in which they handled adversity.  So for our near misses ...
  • 4 x 200 (Spencer, Micayla, Nia, Chante)
  • Kara in TJ and 100H
  • Jessica in the Discus
... congratulations on your outstanding performances! As coaches, we have been in your position ... we know it's not easy.  We are extremely proud of your efforts this season and are glad we have more years to try again.

Thanks to our wonderful parents who provided meals to and from the meet, water and snacks for the meet, traveled hours and endured wet/cold weather to cheer on and support our athletes.  Thank you so much ... we are blessed to have you!

We will send out information on the state meet as soon as it has confirmed.  We hope to see as many of you there as possible  ... Prelims for class 2A begin on Friday at 9a and are scheduled to be finished by 1230p.  The Finals for all 3 classes begin at 10A on Saturday and are scheduled to be finished around 5p.  This meet features the best athletes in the state and some of the best in the nation.  It is one of the best organized and well run sporting events I have witnessed.  If you like our sport, you'll love this meet.  Make plans to cheer on our qualifiers ... the weather, so far, looks to be great ... warm and sunny.  Hope to see you there!!

Notes:
The weather forecast is for Temps in the 50's and some shower activity.  Participants and spectators should be prepared to for wet/cool weather.  Plastic bags to keep clothes and shoes dry.  Extra layers in case clothing gets wet and a bag to put wet clothes in.

Please bring water/snacks.

We have a nearly 2 1/2 hour plus bus ride to and from the track meet.  I drove there last night for the seed meeting and it was 2:15 in a car.  The easiest ways to get there are I74 West; to I474; to Rt 24 west; to Rt 136 West to Macomb or; I55 South to Rt 136 West. (MapQuest or Google Maps can help)  There is some construction on both routes. Delays are minimal ... but they are there so please allow for the extra time.  Once you drive into Macomb on Rt. 136 and see the old courthouse, you will see signs directing you to the Macomb JR/SR High School complex ... about one mile from old courthouse.

The meet is scheduled to finish at 9:30p.  That is assuming no weather or equipment delays.  We will need to wait for final results so the earliest we will be able to leave Macomb to return home will be close to10p.  Please be patient .... long bus ride at night so I am guessing a return time near 12:30a ... hopefully sooner but I doubt it.
If you plan to take your athlete home, please remember, I need you to sign them out.  I will need a written note from your parent before I will allow you to ride home with another parent.  If you do not have a note, please don't ask.

This is the single most important meet we have this year to date ... all athletes are expected to stay until the completion of the meet.  Regardless of debate, this is a team sport and being a part of the team means more than running your own events.  Supporting and encouraging teammates who are trying to set season bests, PR's and qualify for the state meet needs to mean more than getting an early start home.  All athletes have a ride on the bus back to school and, if necessary, I will give them a ride home from school if you cannot stay until the end.   University High School is the defending Sectional Champion and we are extremely proud to have each athlete represent our school on Thursday and to experience the entire Sectional Meet.  Program pride and tradition should override a bit of sleep deprivation.  If you have questions/concerns, please contact me.  (One disclaimer ... I did not have any control as to where we were sent or having the meet scheduled on a school night ... we can only work with what we are assigned.  As coaches, we can only have our athletes as prepared as we can.  We will be ready to go and leave the things we have no control over for other teams to worry about.)

On behalf of the team, we are very thankful for our parents and friends who have traveled so well and supported our entire team.  We feel blessed to have the parent support we have and it is awesome to look up into the stands and see a large group of vocal parents who appreciate the talent and effort of our young ladies.  They are a wonderful group to coach.  They compete with confidence and conduct themselves in a manner we are proud of.   John Neisler, Lester Hampton, Karonji Carr, Natalie Wheeler, Adam Rasche, Brent Seibring and I are very proud to wear the title of "Coach", not only for this program we have worked to develop, but especially for this year's team.  Best of luck to our young ladies.  Go Pioneers!

Track Notes, 5/12/14

Still feeling good about the Conference meet last Friday!   Most of all, I'm happy with the way our team competed.  It seemed we were in the running to score in every single event (in fact, we did!) and that is a direct reflection of our athletes determination and willingness to work as a team.  Not sure where I should start ...

Wins:
Sydney Billingsley's wins in the 3200 and 1600 ... quite possibly the hardest combo in HS track.  Her 1600 time was a season best and Class 2A leading 4:59.39!
Gabi Jacobs' wins in the shot and discus
Chante Stonewall's wins in the 100H and 300H
4 x 200's win (Spencer, Micayla, Nia and Chante)

2nd place finishes:
4 x 800 (Ashley, Madigan, Amber and Leah) in a school record time 9:43.51
Micayla in the 100M
Nia in the 200M

Our girl's controlled the meet 161.67 to second place Mahomet/Seymor's 131 with personal and season bests scattered throughout the evening.  As coaches, we are very proud of the way our team prepared, competed and conducted themselves throughout the week.

Our focus now turns to Sectionals, which will be this Thursday at Macomb High School. This meet is our most important to date and is the only opportunity for an athlete to qualify for the State Meet.  We have no doubt our girls will continue to prepare in the same manner they have all season.  You can support them by .... helping them to remember to drink plenty of water, to get rest, stretch, ice any aches or pains and simply encouraging them.   You should be proud of the way they have been prepared and focused all year and we are confident that will not change now.  I believe the confident and encouraging voices they hear every meet has helped them too ... thanks to our awesome supporters!  We hope to see as many of you as possible in Macomb!!

Assignments will be posted tomorrow after they are made this afternoon at practice.  Meet information and travel times will be posted then also.

Remember, practice is at 415p this afternoon so we can get on the track.

Finally, a quote I shared last year but is even more true this year:

(Dedicated to our incredible coaching staff ... John Neisler, Adam Rasche, Natalie Brunson-Wheeler, Karonji Carr and Lester Hampton, who work tirelessly and without making excuses, create a environment where our young people succeed)
"People with passion are incredibly inventive and tenacious individuals.  They go way beyond the call of duty and frequently work on their passion without pay or give more of themselves than their pay warrants."

Corn Belt Conference Meet Information:

As discussed at our team meetings, all team members, unless excused, are expected at this meet and will be dismissed at 1:30p to leave at 1:45p.  If you have been excused from attending the meet by Coach Neisler or I, you are to stay in class.

Our girls have worked through and overcome bad weather, illness, injury and no track facilities to be able to compete.  They are proof that dedication, the right attitude and hard work are more important than facilities and/or excuses.  I can assure you there is no other team or athletes the coaching staff would rather bring than this group.  We believe they represent the best of student athletes anywhere.  We are proud of each one of them!

Come cheer on our girls and boys teams as they compete for a championship!  Hope to see you at the meet!!  Go Pioneers!

Track Notes, 5/6/14

Congratulations to our girls for their impressive victory at the Urbana Invite last Friday.  We won the 13 team event with a score of 115.33 to runner up Springfield Southeast's 77.  There were many outstanding performances ... Our 4 x 800 ran a time that a week ago would have been a school record.(9:48.68).  Sydney ran a gutsy 800M narrowly missing yet another school record and then winning the 1600M.  Gabi won the shot and discus ... again!  Chante won the 100M and 300M hurdle events (again) and then helped our 4 x 200 team to third against an outstanding sprint field.  Leah and Amber showcased their outstanding versatility  ... I could keep going but I'll end by saying this team demonstrated the type of consistent performances we need to be successful these next weeks.  We should all be proud of this team, their effort and willingness to compete is fun to watch!

Tonight is the Cornbelt Fresh/Soph Conference meet.  I will be going to this meet and Coach Neisler will be staying at school with the remaining Junior/Senior athletes.

All F/S athletes are encouraged to attend this meet regardless of whether or not you are assigned an event.

Michelle Styczynski, Kara Henry, Jessica Baker, Rhea Gibson, Amber Nanni and Leah Taylor will be dismissed from school at 2p and leave on a mini bus I will be driving at 2:15p to have time to prepare for their 4p events. All remaining athletes will be dismissed at their usual time and the bus will leave as soon as possible after ... no later than 3:10p.  Please be ready on time! Coach Carr will be supervising the bus we will share with the boys FS team.

Track Notes, 4/27/14

Bloomington/Normal Intercity Classic

Monday is the Intercity Meet at BHS.  This meet includes Varsity and JV events!   I hope you are able to come watch what is always an exciting meet for city wide bragging rights.   There are some very talented athletes in Bloomington - Normal including our very own.  It will be the last time our intercity Seniors will all be in the same meet competing against one another.  It's my hope they all know how much we enjoyed watching them compete, regardless of what uniform they wear.  That being said ... Go Pioneers!  Our Seniors are Sydney Billingsley, Gabi Jacobs, Lauren Rosenthal and Anna Trevarthan.  Come show our appreciation for their dedication and commitment, and especially their leadership, these last few years.  It is especially bittersweet for Coach Niesler and I as they came to our program at the same time we did.  Our program has flourished since they have arrived and I cannot imagine where our program would be without them.

There will be 2 entries per varsity event and 3 entries per JV event.  The JV portion will be non-scored. The top 5 individual finishers on the varsity level will receive medals. The relays will receive awards through 4th place. Medals will be given for 1st through 3rd on the JV level. The field events start at 4:30 and the running events at 5:00.
